Help Us Keep Our Doors Open

Secure the Future of Modern Times
As you may know, these are perilous times for independent bookstores. During the past several years, several landmark Bay Area bookshops have closed due to declining sales.

Although used bookstores continue to survive, stores like Modern Times that carry the latest releases—hand selected by knowledgeable staff—are becoming increasingly rare. Even rarer is a bookstore that has been worker-run and owned since 1971.

On the most basic level, the only thing that keeps us open is people buying books, but there are numerous other ways you can help. We know our customers are interested in our survival, because you keep asking us how we're doing. We really appreciate your concern! Below is a list of various ways you can support Modern Times.
 

What You Can Do To Help...

  • Donate to our newly created Tede Matthews Initiative (tax deductable): Through partnerships with community organizations, schools, artists, and educators, we will be launching a series of classes, panel discussions, and cultural events to support the Bay Area's activist, artist, and literary communities and we need your help to get things started!   • Sponsor a section of the bookstore: For a set amount of money you can adopt one of our sections either in your name, your organization's name, or in someone else's name. In recognition, you will be added to a plaque listing all of our donors that hangs at the front of the store. We will also place a personal nametag on the section of the store that you choose.   • Buy American Bookseller Association Gift Cards: Buy one, ten, twenty, or more! They don't expire. These cards can be used directly at Modernt Times or at other independent bookstores in the Bay Area and around the country. They are an excellent way for your organization to show appreciation to employees, volunteers, students, etc. More information »

  • Become a member: Get 10% off all purchases and receive our events calendar in the mail for a year. If you are already a member, please consider upgrading to a lifetime membership (which will also get your name on our plaque). More information »

  • Donate equipment (or put us in contact with others who can): Our wish list currently consists of new carpeting, Creative Suite 3 or 4 software, a new paint job, a hanging sign for the front of our store, and a PC. Contact Rebecca Tumposky if you can help.

  • Rent our back room: If you belong to a group or institution, consider renting our back room as a meeting space. Contact Rebecca Tumposky for more information.

  • Do an institutional book buy: If your organization or work place needs to do a book buy, please consider Modern Times for your purchases. We do give discounts for large quantity orders. We are accustomed to filling orders for events, college courses, high school groups, nonprofit orgs, etc. Contact Rebecca Tumposky to find out more.

 

Please help us continue our work as an activist, creative, independent bookstore. Funding to implement our new business plan is critical to our continued presence. With the right investment in our future, we plan to not only survive, but to grow. Here's to the next 38 years!
