Veteran organizers and former Windcall Residents from PODER, Dolores Street Community Services, and Asian Pacific Environmental Network join Wells. Net proceeds of the book to benefit the Windcall Institute.

Street Art as Resistance: Free Two-Day Workshop

What can you do when gentrifiers squeeze you out of your neighborhood seemingly with the full support of City Hall? Reclaim public space! Bring your friends, your mom, your little brother, and your grandma and join local artists from around San Francisco and Oakland for this hands-on workshop on low cost and low skill methods for making street art. Artists will instruct in simple and cheap technique, while providing information on and images of the rich history of art as resistance from around the world and back to the Mission. On Saturday, facilitators will go over the history as well as inexpensive methods for screenprinting. Sunday’s workshop will focus on the history and production of stenciling. These workshops are intended for long-time Mission residents and other folks fighting displacement. Workshops will be led in Spanish as well as English.

Flying Close to the Sun

With an honesty and candor that challenges and contradicts other histories of this period, Wilkerson describes coming into consciousness as a political activist and a feminist, joining first the Civil Rights Movement, then Students for a Democratic Society, and finally the Weather Underground. Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz joins her.

Spanish Book Group / Círculo de Lectores de Literatura en Español

Join us for our Spanish language book group on the fourth Tuesday of each month. A mix of native speakers and advanced level hablantes, the group has been meeting in the Mission District on a monthly basis for eight years. Books are available for 10% off at the store. The discussions are lively and fully in Spanish.
November's selection is La Puta de Babilonia by Colombian author Fernando Vallejo. Vallejo is the author of various novels including La Virgen de los sicarios (made into a film) and Mi hermano el alcalde.
