Miranda July & Sherman Alexie Pack the House
May was an exciting month for us. First we absolutely packed the house when Miranda July, star, screenwriter, and director of the internationally-acclaimed, award-winning film Me and You and Everyone We Know, graced Modern Times for a reading from her new book No One Belongs Here More Than You. The store was so crowded Miranda had to climb up a ladder and sit atop our hallway structure. People were out on the street. See photos here. Our event even made it into Wikipedia. It shows a picture of Miranda with our "hella gay" sign behind her.
Then just two weeks later we filled the Roxie New College Film Center to capacity for a combinatin stand-up comedy routine and book reading...in true Sherman Alexie style. He read from his new novel Flight. In fact, as it turns out, Alexie's publisher neglected to inform him of precisely where he was reading and the poor guy ended up at the main building of the New College campus without a fan in site. Read an hysterical account of the evening.on his blog. Thankfully it all worked out and he still adores us..."I fell in love with the crazy owner-employees of Modern Times, who were indeed a random bunch of bald lesbians, dyed-hair radicals, militant vegans, dedicated progressives, and nerdy bookworms disguised as lovely alternative fashion models."
