Nancy Rose, Put to Work: Relief Programs in the Great Depression

For over fifty years, Monthly Review Press has published important works of left scholarship from an independent socialist perspective. Monthly Review Press’ distinctive contributions to the world of ideas has advanced an analysis that works to explain the tendency of contemporary capitalism toward slow growth and stagnation, the growing importance of debt and the financial sector, the central role of technological innovation, and the continuing and deepening economic inequality between the rich and poor nations, and between the rich and poor everywhere. It has paid special attention to questions of imperialism, ecological degradation under capitalism, Marxist theory, and published important works on the labor movement, feminism, and history, many of which are used heavily by schools and libraries. Today, Monthly Review Press continues to publish books that are scholarly but accessible and speak to the realities of workers, educators, and activists around the world.

L.E. Leone
- Wednesday, June 10

When Oaklandette L.E. Leone wasn't writing the popular Cheap Eats column for the San Francisco Bay Guardian over the past 15 years, she was nonchalantly publishing fantastic short stories, a splendid collection of which were gathered in one handy location last year in the anthology Big Bend (the title story of which won the Malahat Review's novella contest in 2002). Also a singer-songwriter, Leone performs as Sister Exister and has been known to thrill audiences with ukuleles, steel drums and other musical devilry. (Sparkle Street)
