Launch
An American Radical
Susan Rosenberg
- Wednesday, April 6
- 7 PM
Modern Times is excited to welcome former U.S. political prisoner Rosenberg to launch her memoir. Rosenberg served sixteen years in some of the worst maximum-security prisons in the United States for her activities as a leftist revolutionary before being pardoned by President Clinton as he left office in 2001. Now, in a story that is both a powerful memoir and a profound indictment of the U.S. prison system, Rosenberg recounts her journey from the impassioned idealism of the 1960s to life as a political prisoner in her own country, subjected to dehumanizing treatment, yet touched by moments of grace and solidarity.

Flash
Jim Miller
- Thursday, April 7
- 7 PM
Flash is a novel that follows muckracking journalist Jack Wilson as he investigates the century-old mystery of the identity of I.W.W. outlaw and revolutionary, Bobby Flash. When Wilson finds an old Wanted poster in a local archive in San Diego, his curiosity leads him deep into the lost history of America's radical past through the Free Speech fights and the Magonista revolt in Mexico, the utopian Llano del Rio Colony, and the first red scare. Bobby Flash crosses paths with the likes of Emma Goldman, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Ben Reitman, and Big Bill Haywood as well as a myriad of other unknown tramps and revolutionaries. Along the way we learn the story of the women who work in contemporary Tijuana's maquiladoras and others struggling to make a living at working class jobs in Los Angeles, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay area.

Ecology and Socialism
Chris Williams
- Friday April 8
- 7 PM
Around the world, consciousness of the threat to our environment is growing. The majority of solutions on offer, from using efficient light bulbs to biking to work, focus on individual lifestyle changes, yet the scale of the crisis requires far deeper adjustments. Ecology and Socialism argues that time still remains to save humanity and the planet, but only by building social movements for environmental justice that can demand qualitative changes in our economy, workplaces, and infrastructure.

Against Equality: Queer Critiques of Gay Marriage
Against Equality Collective, Ryan Conrad, and Yasmin Nair
- Saturday, April 16
- 7 PM
While what feels like the entirety of the gay and lesbian movement is marching in unison towards some vague notion of equality, the Against Equality collective has been quietly assembling a digital archive to document the critical resistance to the politics of inclusion. This pocket-sized book of archival texts lays out some of the historical foundations of queer resistance to the gay marriage mainstream alongside more contemporary inter-subjective critiques that deal directly with issues of race, class, gender, citizenship, age, ability, and more. Including written work by some of today's foremost and emerging queer voices: Kate Bornstein, Eric Stanley, Dean Spade, Craig Willse, Kenyon Farrow, Kate Raphael, Deeg, John D’Emilio, Ryan Conrad, Yasmin Nair, Martha Jane Kaufman, Katie Miles, and Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore .

Demodulating Angel: Selected Poems 1960-2010
Richard Tagett
- Wednesday, April 20
- 7 PM
Come celebrate longstanding San Francisco-based poet Richard Tagett's launch of his collected work. "Fifty years at work in the field, he has been changing with the times, alert to the tiniest of human feelings as well as to the larger currents of shared social struggle. Like Jack Spicer, with whom he worked closely and on whom he coedited a volume of lasting value, Tagett knows when and how to lure the right words to his page, and how to insure they stick close to his branches.... I know of no other American poet whose very pages are as well filled out. What an accomplishment!"—Kevin Killian.

The Afro Latin@ Reader
Juan Flores & Miriam Jimenez Roman
- Monday, April 25
- 7 PM
The Afro-Latin@ Reader focuses attention on a large, vibrant, yet oddly invisible community in the United States: people of African descent from Latin America and the Caribbean. The presence of Afro-Latin@s in the United States (and throughout the Americas) belies the notion that Blacks and Latin@s are two distinct categories or cultures. Offering insight into Afro-Latin@ life and new ways to understand culture, ethnicity, nation, identity, and antiracist politics, The Afro-Latin@ Reader presents a kaleidoscopic view of Black Latin@s in the United States. It addresses history, music, gender, class, and media representations in more than sixty selections, including scholarly essays, memoirs, newspaper and magazine articles, poetry, short stories, and interviews.

Urban Homesteading: Heirloom Skills for Sustainable Living
Rachel Kaplan, K. Ruby Blume
- Wednesday, April 27
- 7 PM
Urban Homesteading is the perfect "back-to-the- land" guide for urbanites who want to reduce their impact on the environment. Full of practical information, as well as inspiring stories from people already living the urban homesteading life, this colorful guide gives a clear understanding of the lifestyle to any reader. It embraces the core concepts of localization (providing our basic needs close to where we live), self-reliance (re-learning that food comes from the ground, not the grocery store), and sustainability (giving back at least as much as we take). Readers will find concise how-to information that they can immediately set into practice, from making solar cookers to growing tomatoes in a pot to raising chickens on a tiny plot to maintaining the mental serenity of country life in the fast-paced city environment.
